The basin of the Samiria River is one of the less accessible areas of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve due to the distance between the larger populations as  Iquitos city or Nauta city.

The entrance to this basin is located approximately 280km away from the city of Iquitos and 180 of the city of Nauta. It is one of the tributaries of the Marañon River, which is born in the north-central of the Andes of Peru.

Within this basin, there are 7 Ranger Stations and several Community Control Stations.

There are at least 5 communities within this territory, who belong to the Cocama Cocamilla ethnic group. These populations existed long before the law that  created to Pacaya Samiria as a National Reserve. People that inhabit in it are dedicated to agricultura, hunting and fishing, depending on the season and the decline or rising of the river.

.

The natural landscapes, the beautiful flora and fauna make this area one of the most beautiful but less visited in the territory of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

To get to this basin we must travel by bus from Iquitos Nauta. Trip which will take us approximately 1.5hrs.

Overnight stay in a small hotel of this town to be able to take a fast boat of public service that  is used to transpor people from Nauta to the city of Yurimaguas.

This boat will  drop us off at Santa Rita de Castilla, where we will be picked up by our boat driver in a small wooden boat in order to reach the community of San Martin de Tipishca, a community which will be our home base.
