The Samiria basin is one of the most important basins of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. It is very rich in flora and fauna. The vast variety of lumber trees made of this basin the best area for illegal extractors to predate main tree species. This became a serious problem since the tallest trees have been cut down and caused the eco system and environment be damaged and obviously the habitat of many animals as well.
Therefore, in San Martin de Tipishca, Segundo Lomas Canaquiri, a schoolteacher who was born in this village, along with 2 other people, decided to run a conservation project with children from the community. In the 2010, they enrolled 15 kids from the elementary school and involved them in the great idea of keeping the village clean, reforestation program and in the quelonians conservation project. Nowadays, there are 70 children enrolled and committed to conservation.
This is how BOSQUE NIÑOS EN ACCION – Children from the Rainforest in Action - was born.
In order to achieve the goals, they had to present the required documentation to the Central Office of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and get the approval from them. Once they got all the paperwork done, they started with such a magnificent plan.

CONSERVATION
Children working for Nature
Children gather together twice a month to collect the garbage in and around the whole village. All the collected garbage is transported to Nauta and then taken to the dump.
Along all the years that these children have been working doing this activity, we have noticed that not only people are healthier and the village is cleaner, but we also realized that adult people and most of the locals are being conscious of keeping the village cleaning and protecting the environment. Thus, the Community President and other authorities decided to built trash boxes to place along the village and advertise the whole community to put trash in the trash boxes.
The nearby populations thought this was a good idea and are also doing the same in their own village.
If you are visiting us during the development of this activity, feel free to join the kids and participate with them.

2. Repopulation of River Turtles
It is quiet common to find eggs of river turtles and turtles itself for sale in the markets of Iquitos. The high value of the eggs has caused the turtles to decrease in populations in the lakes and rivers of the Amazon basin. Most people are only seeking their own interests in getting money without being concerned about preserving the species for the future. To every one of us it is very important to keep the animal species alive and have our children the opportunity to know and enjoy the diversity of the river turtles in the Samiria Basin. This is why we are also committed to take care of the adults and eggs of the Charapas – Podocnemis expansa and the Taricaya – Podocnemis unifilis.
In a coordinated hand-to-hand work with the Central office of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and the Rangers who work in the area, we organize small groups to collect the eggs of the turtles and re-nest them in artificial sand banks till they hatch. Once they hatch, we take of them for couple of weeks and then we release tem in the nearby lakes and tributaries.
This way we will keep the populations of river turtles in all our area.
Children from the organization participate during all the process from collecting the eggs up to the release time. This is a wok that should be acknowledged by our Government and by the city authorities.
At Samiria Expeditions, we are willing to let you get involved in this project. You can participate in the collection, maintenance of the sand bank and release the turtles in their nature habitat.

3. Plant a tree. Save the Planet
Deforestation is a worldwide problem and the Amazon is being considered the Hope of the Planet. Children from our village are very conscious and concerned about it that they also working to keep our Amazon green.
We already have planted over 1000 trees and have a large tree nursery that is to be planted along the year.
Rangers and children from the organization work together to plant trees in the Samiria basin area. The goal is to plant One Million trees up to the 2030.
If you are willing to support this very important project, you can buy a plant from the children organization. It cost $3.00 each.
All the funds go directly to the kids and they use the funds to buy their school supplies.
On the other hand, if you are willing to bring school supplies or school uniforms to donate them, they will truly appreciate it a lot.
